Re: Worlds?

Gerard, with the Netherlands Sunfish Klasse appears to be posting some updates already from Italy: http://www.sunfishklasse.nl/worlds/default.asp

apparently, they are having some issues with the daggerboards being too big!

more pictures from Gerard can be found here.

Re: Worlds?

Thanks tag. I will keep checking those sites.

The Dutch provided interesting reports from the (windy) 2009 Worlds in the Bahamas with different sailors blogging.
Looking forward to seeing more of those...

Re: Worlds?

here's another site to check - from Jonathan Martinetti, of Ecuador. latest post:
http://www.martinettiecuador.com/201...punta-ala.html
it's not English, so I used Google Translate to (sort of) convert it to English here.

to Wavedancer - the top of the daggerboard does look different, that's for sure.

cheers,
tag

Re: Worlds?

The results of the first day (3 races) can be found on the Dutch site:
http://www.sunfishklasse.nl/worlds/default.asp

The Dutch contingent must be a happy bunch because The Netherlands beat Denmark 2-0 in World Cup soccer today....

In persuit is the Van Aanholt family: place 4-6! The Curcacao equipe is performing exellent in these Italian waters: 5 sailors in the top-14.

Re: Worlds?

Looks like some aggressive sailing and/or RC issues? The OCSs and Black Flag toss-outs are staggering. Anyone know why Bill Brangiforte retired today?

It appears that only race 5 had BFDs. And you expect aggressive starting at this level...
Current could be the reason for the OCS disqualifications.

PS: It's been awhile, but my old mind seems to remember mostly Black Flag starts at the Worlds that I attended. One hundred boats in those days, which made life a lot harder on the RC (and the sailors).

Re: Worlds?

Sorry for my ignorance and the fact that I have not raced in 25 years. Back then you had DNS, DNF or DSQ. So what is BFD, OCS and RAF?

Re: Worlds?

BFD = Black Flag Disqualification This is over the line within on minute of the start with a black flag flying

OCS = On the course side also known as over early

RAF = Retired after finish Probably fouled someone and thought about it during the race and did not do 720 so did the right thing and dropped out after the race.

Does anyone know what was really wrong witht he center boards, too big can mean a lot. Were they too long or too big front to back or too wide and did not fit the trunk. The pictures of show a black top on the boards, what is this about.

Sure wish I was there but I am working 70 hours a week and was not able to make it.

Re: Worlds?

Results after three days of racing have been posted on the Dutch site. But there appear to be some errors in the ranking. For instance, Ard van Aanholt is listed in 37th place, but should be in third place, I think, with 38 points.

Top five after nine races (preliminary!):

Jonathan Martinetti: 20 pts
David Mendelblatt: 25
Ard van Aanholt 38
Just van Aanholt 40
Conner Blouin 49

The young guys are taking over, but (not so young) Mendelblatt could still win it all...

I thought you retired??

Looked like the boards were too thick. LP announced a new mfr a while back. Belive the boards were to be made of glass instead of foam. Apparently the new mfr does not own a calipers. Chris

Re: Worlds?

I cannot remember the last time we had a World Championship with this many young sailors in the front. Four out of the top 5 are 22 years old or younger. There are another two juniors in the top 10 right now. It is great to see!

Regardless, I hope Dave brings home the gold!

On a side note, the sailors from Curacao came out in full force and are putting on a great show in Italy. They could be scary on their home waters next year.

Thanks Gerard!

Re: Worlds?

I'm more impressed with the new sail color - very sharp. Note they went with the red Sunfish logo to pick up the red on the sail, rather than the standard black colored logo.

Actual new pictures of the latest rudder as well - I like my dual tube model better, this looks a little too primitive.....

And yes, the new rudder is an absolute joy to steer, as compared to the pre-'72 style....

Re: Worlds?

Gerard from the Netherlands once again comes through in spades.

Here are some photos of the new daggerboards, looks like they've been sanded/ground down to get them to fit in the daggerboard slot.

and here are some photos from Wednesday (day 3).

Re: Worlds?

I have seen a few pictures of the fleet launching and returning but no actual racing pics. Last yr there were tons of pics after each race. Does anyone know if someone is taking some pics which will be posted?
