This girl is so dear to me. May she sail forever over the sunset…. She’s so well built that I couldn’t complete her cutdown this afternoon. I’ve saved all her hardware and fittings. In my sunfish obsessed way, I promised her that her fittings will sail again, whether I’m around to build it or...
Awesome! I have no idea why I suddenly can’t post pics, but thank you for acknowledging the pain that comes when we take the steps to decommission a boat ❤️
Tonight, after much soul searching, I took a circular saw to Skye - one of the extremely early fiberglass Alcort Sailfish. My health isn’t great and I can’t justify the inventory of project boats I still have. I’m keeping a few parts of her deck for posterities sake, but in addition, here are...
It’s very satisfying. I did mine I think by hand. Start with a rough grit and work your way up, using polishing compound at the last several stages, with wet/dry sandpaper.
The originalKits did indeed have a wooden mast. Unfortunately they almost universally snapped under use. The company shipped replacement tapered aluminum masts.
After heavy duty downsizing, my fleet is now at two Sunfish and two Sailfish. One Sunfish is blissfully stored in a nice safe place next to another, at the house next to where I grew up.
Now I’ve got to find a cozy storage for the other three. I purchased a Harken Hoister and am planning to...
I have a Right On Trailer. It’s beyond easy and convenient. My only issue is that in the state of Illinois I’d have an easier time performing my own brain surgery than getting the darn thing licensed. …and this is after I purchased retail from the Right On company!
I was gifted a marine radio for Christmas when I started to restore Fishnet, (as well as an awesome PFD). If I’m a large bidy if water, the fully charged radio will be with me. Period.
I think they were considering somehow building up the stations? My understanding is the craftsman is an accomplished woodworker but not necessarily a boatbuilder.
In hindsight, I really wish I had just asked for more time and completed the restoration. I know i personally wouldn’t want to...
Received this message from Woodie’s owner, who has found a Michigan craftsman to finish her up.
“I have a friend here who is a naval architect, who believes that the boat will be much stronger if the frames are epoxied to the top and bottom panels, although defers to anyone with more knowledge...
Thanks! I’ve been pondering whether it might be fun (I’m a science nerd) to find something that I could form in a mold to use in place of the buckets, for different weight, sustainability, configurations….
