I have not done so with any of my ‘fish. However, I had a Sears surfwind that I bought damaged and did exactly that. I cut open a square hole in the front port side of the hull so that I could reinforce the interior and add some foam for flotation. When finished, I glassed the hole, and used the...
Sharing my love of sailing with my 12 year old granddaughter. Lake Macatawa, MI on my '76 ("Super") with a recreational lateen sail instead of the Super Sunfish rig that I normally use on it. The daggerboard should have been down a bit more, but she found it comforting to be able to lean against it.
I recommend getting it off the ground if possible. Can you put down a couple of 4 x 4‘s on the ground first and then rest the side of the boat on those blocks while leaning it against the building?
Here are all three rudders, side-by-side for comparison. The AroeSouth drops 26 inches below the bottom of the gudgeon. The imitation knock off from eBay drops down 23 inches. And a class legal rudder drops16 inches.
Actually, I was able to see your Cunningham and outhaul configuration using micro blocks on your recent Russian river video.. That was very helpful. Thank you.
I have both the AeroSouth rudder, and an imitation one off of eBay. I’ve had the same problem with the imitation one kicking up too easily. I don’t think they got the geometry right for the positioning of the pre-drilled holes for the spring peg. I’ve never had a problem with the AeroSouth...
I don't think I have fully understood this point until now, when you explained it so clearly. Thank you! AreoSouth claims that their rudder also has less drag, which I feel is true, though it is difficult to compare even on the same day when swapping out rudders considering there are so many...
Andy, when you get a chance, I'd like to see your setup for your outhaul and cuningham lines. Curious as to how you get the 3:1 and 4:1 advantage without the lines getting all bunched up in the end cap.
I have both the official AeroSouth rudder that I use on my Sunfish and Super Sunfish, and more recently I bought the shorter knockoff for my wife's Minifish and I noticed the same problem that you described where the knockoff seems to pop up too easily. I think the hole where the pin goes that...
I bought one of the first AeroSouth rudders and it did break after just a few outings. I contacted them and they noted that they had improved the design to address that, and sent me a new one free of charge. I have had it now for 3 years and I love it. It reduces the weather helm tremendously...
Finally responding to you 3 years later, Charlie. (I'm blaming the pandemic LOL)
Her Minfish has the shadow board. We tried sailing with my newer plastic foil, but it is unecessarily long,
You have a beautiful boat! From a 2017 chart, I see that the Mini II is rated at 103 vs. 113.4 for the standard Mini. I am sure she points better than either the standard Mini or the standard Sunfish.
A couple of observations, as I have a Minifish, Sunfish and Super Sunfish...
The mast step...
Here is a photo from November a couple of years back sailing my Super Sunfish on Orchard Lake (one of the most sailor friendly lakes in SE MI, IMHO). Not a great shot, but you can kinda see what I had on: a waterproof windbreaker with hood, thick water socks and water shoes, and waterproof pants...
